Sydenham Library is always keen to talk to prospective new volunteers. Volunteering at a library can be a very rewarding experience, and experience is not required – what we’re really looking for is reliability and enthusiasm. Some volunteers are involved purely in checking in and out books and shelving items, others find themselves drawn to particular areas of library work and that can mean any number of things in a library from display work to helping run rhyme-time sing-alongs for children; from helping users access computers to simply trying to help someone find the right book. Some volunteers love working with children, some want to avoid the children’s library; some are excellent at explaining to others how to use computers, others know little or nothing about computers at all – we entirely understand this and you’ll never be alone on a shift, there will always be someone around with experience.
We always need at least two volunteers on each shift and often three or four during busy periods, some shifts are more popular than others, but we’re always particularly keen to hear from anyone who has the ability to cover Saturday shifts. Also anyone who is keen to help out with baby-bounce and rhyme-time sessions with the younger children.
You don’t have to commit to working the same hours every week, or even working every week, but we do ask that you can be relied upon – don’t put yourself down for shifts that you can not do. Still interested? Then we’d love to hear from you, please contact contact@sydenhamlibrary.co.uk
